Welcome, to Health & Wellbeing Magazine’s Spirit Keeper monthly column.  This is the place where you will discover tips and practices for creating, developing and maintaining a personalised self-care practice as a Spirit Keeper.

We are now in the third year of this column.  I am focusing on the development of specific characteristics using mindfulness techniques and rituals. Daily habits without purpose drift; daily habits with purpose compound.  A Spirit Keeper has characteristics which can be described as soulful, spiritual, mindful and masterful. A true integration between mind, body, spirit and soul.

These characteristics are mastered and embodied through reflective inner work and action practice in the outer world.  I will be using the chakras as a guide.  By learning to embrace the positive and negative archetypal force of the characteristic, one can walk the middle road and have one foot in the world of spirit, and one firmly planted on Mother Earth.  As Gregg Braden describes it, walking between the worlds.

The specific characteristics are:

  • Self-reliance
  • Self-Care
  • Self-Worth
  • Self-Appreciation
  • Self-Expression
  • Self-Exploration
  • Selflessness

These characteristics to me are sovereign powers which form the backbone to the personality of a Spirit Keeper.  One of the principles of moving from the wounded healer to the integrated healer is to come from a place of personal integrity.  One needs to be walking the talk and talking the walk.  What Ghandi referred to as ‘becoming the change you wish to see in the world’.

This month, November 2026, I will focus on the characteristic of self-expression and how this can be developed as a key characteristic of being a healing facilitator and Spirit Keeper.

Metaphorical Story :  Self-Expression & Authenticity

The Path of Whispers was steep, its earth packed tight by the boots of countless seekers who had climbed the mountainside in search of truth. Yasmina’s breath caught the sharp, resinous perfume of pine and juniper as she stepped into the high forest glade.

It was an ancient amphitheatre of living medicine. Towering oaks, pine and ash trees stood like emerald pillars, their leaves filtering the golden afternoon sun. To one side, a modest dwelling of grey stone and weathered timber sat humped against the slope, flanked by a babbling stream which gushed and giggled over smooth pebbles. In the heart of the glade lay a circular fire pit, guarded by four large, flat stones upholstered in thick, vibrant green moss.

Sitting upon the moss-covered stones were the sages: Dhrona, whose eyes held the quiet stillness of deep roots, and Mother Sela, whose silver hair seemed to catch the wind even when the air was entirely still. Birdsong braided itself through the scent of wildflowers as they gestured for Yasmina to take her place on an empty stone.

Yasmina sat, carrying the heavy, invisible burden many modern healers bear; the exhausting weight of trying to split herself in two. She was a spirit keeper in private, but a frantic businessperson in public, trying to force her sacred medicine into the cold, geometric boxes of modern marketing in an over-systemised healthcare and wellbeing industry.

Mother Sela looked intensely at the fire pit, though it was currently unlit. “You are tired, little bird,” she said, her voice like water over stone. “You are trying to carry water in a net. You keep your medicine in the dark, and you sell a painted image of it in the light.”

Dhrona nodded slowly, tending to a small piece of juniper wood in his hands. “To be a guardian of ancient ways, Yasmina, you must master the sacred dance of walking the talk and talking the walk. Authenticity is a golden thread which must weave seamlessly through your personal life and your public commerce. If the thread snaps between the two, the medicine spoils.”

“How do I keep it from snapping?” Yasmina asked, her voice tight with the constriction of her throat chakra.

Mother Sela leaned forward. “Personally, it begins when the sun kisses the horizon. You cannot offer a well to the thirsty if your own ground is parched. Your daily self-care rituals (your prayers, your grounding, your centring) are not tasks. They are the act of anchoring your roots into the divine bedrock and the very nature of life. You must be the living, breathing guardian of your modalities, integrating your own mind, body, spirit, and soul before you ever invite another to sit by your hearth. Daily habits without purpose drift; daily habits with purpose compound.”

“But the world of business feels so hostile to that hearth,” Yasmina sighed. “To find clients, I am told I must use the language of the marketplace. I must build polished facades.”

Dhrona tossed the juniper stick into the centre of the fire pit. It landed with a soft thud. “Look at this fire pit,” he said. “In the marketplace of healing, many believe marketing is the act of running into the dark forest with a torch, chasing people down, and convincing them to buy your warmth. That is not marketing. That is hunting. For a spirit keeper, marketing is simply lighting the fire. It is an extension of the medicine itself. When your self-expression is grounded in authentic behaviour, your business transitions from a gruelling chore into a glowing beacon. This doesn’t mean you don’t talk about your healing practice or do nothing to promote it, what you don’t do is chase people by using the language of fear and scarcity.”

Mother Sela pointed a weathered finger at Yasmina. “Authenticity is not a moral luxury, child. It is the most potent asset the business of healing possesses. Think of the souls searching for you. They are wounded, wrapped in heavy layers of armour. Their nervous systems are hyper-vigilant. If your public face feels like a polished, corporate script, their armour tightens. They detect the mismatch. True authenticity is a somatic key; it signals to their deepest cells your space is safe enough for them to drop their shields and to begin their own healing journey.”

“And consider your own life-force,” Dhrona added. “To wear the mask of a ‘professional guru’ (always healed, always flawless) requires immense energy. It is like holding a heavy boulder above your head. It leads to rapid burnout. But when you express yourself exactly as you are, you spend zero life-force pretending. You become energetically sustainable.”

“Furthermore,” Mother Sela smiled, a mischievous glint in her eyes, “a true beacon filters the dark. If you hide your quirks, your sacred vocabulary, and your beautiful human flaws behind a generic wellness facade, you will attract generic seekers who want a generic healer. But when you speak your raw truth, you become a lighthouse. Your light passes right over those who are not yours and strikes the hearts of your ‘soul match’ clients; the ones uniquely primed for your specific flavour of medicine.”

Yasmina absorbed their words, feeling a warm vibration blooming at the base of her throat. “But how does this look to the outside world? How do I build a bridge from this sacred glade to the marketplace?”

“By changing how you share your journey,” Dhrona explained. “The world tells you to create content, to manufacture illusions. We tell you to document over create. Pull back the silken curtain of your practice. Let them see the configuration of your morning altar. Let them witness your relationship with the local ash and oak trees. Share the real-world lesson you just integrated through tears yesterday. Speak from the messy middle of life, rather than from an untouchable, sterile pedestal.”

Mother Sela gestured to the wild, tangled flora around them. “The modern wellness market loves a sanitized narrative; minimalist, beige, perfectly curated feeds where not a single leaf is out of place. This is dead space. Authentic expression disrupts this aesthetic of ghost-towns. It is loud, raw, unedited videos in the heart of a stormy forest, bold and chaotic colours, or a face wearing zero makeup. It shifts the seeker’s focus from looking flawless to feeling intensely alive.”

“And finally,” Dhrona said, his voice dropping into a resonant, deep frequency, “you must trade the language of the machine for the language of the soul. The marketplace demands keywords and cold algorithms. But your medicine demands visceral, evocative truth. Do not merely tell the world you offer ‘stress management coaching’ to fit a search box. Describe the agonizing beauty of reclaiming the scattered fragments of your attention from a loud, fracturing world. Speak directly to the weeping root of the issue, not the withered leaf.”

Yasmina sat in the silence which followed. The babbling stream seemed to carry away the residual tension in her jaw. She took a deep breath, imagining a vibrant, lapis-blue light filling her throat chakra and anchored firmly down into her heart and the mossy stone beneath her.

She understood now. Her business was not a separate entity to be managed with corporate tools; it was simply the smoke rising from her sacred fire, carrying the scent of pine and juniper out into the valleys to guide the weary home.  Authentic self-expression as a practice and quality were vital for her soul journey and evolution.  Only then could she be in a place and space to be of service to others and help them to open their own windows, see the view and their connection to the sacred thread of life.  Allowing them to express their inner understanding of what it means to be a spiritual being having a human experience.

Yasmina stood and thanked Dhrona and Mother Sela for helping her to understand the importance of walking the talk and talking the walk both personally and professionally.  Yasmina understood now self-expression showed up in thought, word and action.  And like so many wise one’s had said before, our thoughts are the drivers of our actions, and our actions create the habits of our lifestyles.  So much of modern day living worshiped people who weren’t authentic in mind, body and spirit.  The true heroes and heroines were silently working behind the scenes anchoring and guarding ancient wisdom without necessarily having celebrity status.  Leadership from the back.  And with that she began the descent down the path of whispers back into the valley below.  Each soul descends to Mother Earth on a quest for expansion and wisdom. Yet, when we fail to remain embodied and grounded, we lose our centre and drift away from our true alignment.  Without an internal anchor, life can feel less like a journey and more like being locked in a cage; leaving us at the mercy of socio-political and economic tides which threaten to erode our autonomy. These systems are designed to drain the very essence of our sovereign power and the profound truth we are, first and foremost, spiritual beings navigating a human experience.

The chakra system acts a wonderful guide for working through the key commands of Know, Love, Heal and Free Yourself.  They are also a useful guide for reflective inner work when it comes to acknowledging the archetypal forces which exist within your own mind, body and spirit.

When you operate at the intersection of spiritual lineage and commercial business, authenticity ceases to be a marketing tactic and becomes your core ethical framework. For a spirit keeper or healing facilitator, authentic self-expression across your behaviour, words, and actions is defined by congruence; ensuring the unseen energy of your private practice matches the visible reality of your public business.

Here is exactly how that looks across those three distinct pillars:

Authentic Behaviour: How You Hold Your Energy

In business, behaviour is your relational blueprint. It is how you interact with money, boundaries, and the invisible space between you and your community.

  • Embodied Boundaries: You do not position yourself as an always-available, infinitely giving saint. Authentic behaviour looks like explicitly stating your limits (e.g., “I do not answer text messages after 6 pm,” or “I am closing my books for a month to tend to my own spirit”). Modelling healthy boundaries is often more healing for a client than the session itself.
  • Decentralising the Self: When a client experiences a massive breakthrough, you don’t take the credit for your business portfolio. Authentic behaviour acknowledges that you are a hollow bone, a facilitator, or a witness, the true healing was done by the client’s spirit and the medicine itself.
  • Financial Right-Relationship (Ayni or Reciprocity): You treat transactions as an energetic exchange rather than an extractive capture. You do not use high-pressure, psychological sales closing tactics. Instead, your booking process feels spacious, grounded, and respectful of the seeker’s autonomy.

Authentic Words: How You Speak Your Truth

For a spirit keeper, words carry vibration of ‘truths’.  Authentic verbal and written expression chooses not to use sanitised corporate copy in favour of unfiltered truth.

  • Admitting the “Messy Middle”: You speak from your scars, not just your scabs. It looks like sharing your current spiritual winters, your moments of doubt, or a day you felt entirely disconnected from spirit. This shatters the dangerous “perfect guru” archetype.
  • Honouring the Lineage openly: You do not claim ancient wisdom as your own “proprietary 5-step system” to look like a genius founder. Authentic words sound like: “I learned this way of speaking to the land from my grandmother,” or “This breath technique belongs to the lineage of…” You give credit where credit is due, resisting the capitalistic urge to trademark the sacred.
  • Using Your True Vocabulary: If you talk to plants, say it. If you track ancestors in the astral plane, say it. Authentic expression means dropping the clinical, watered-down terminology (“stress reduction specialist”) if it dilutes your actual reality, while remaining grounded enough not to use spiritual jargon to bypass real human emotion.

Authentic Actions: How You Walk Your Talk

Actions are where your philosophy meets the pavement. In a business context, your actions prove whether your marketing copy is a costume or a lifestyle.

  • Integration Over Scale: Instead of constantly pushing to scale your business, launch bigger cohorts, or automate your intimacy, authentic action often looks like slowing down. It means limiting the number of souls you hold space for in a week because you recognize the physical limits of your own nervous system.
  •  Practicing in the Dark: The most authentic action a healer takes is maintaining a robust, deep spiritual practice that never gets posted on social media. If you only pray, make offerings, or sit in ceremony when the camera is rolling, it is performance, not keepership.
  • Turning Away Clean Money for Dirty Alignment: Authentic action means actively declining clients or lucrative corporate partnerships if their energy or values clash with your medicine. You trust that saying “no” to misaligned revenue leaves a vacuum for true abundance.

THE AUTHENTICITY TRIAD:

The Ultimate Litmus Test: Ask yourself, “If my social media, my website, and my bank account were completely erased tomorrow, would the spirits I work with still recognise me by the way I carried myself today?” If the answer is yes, you are operating in absolute authentic self-expression.

In the spirit of Yasmina’s journey to learn about self-expression, here are some mindfulness techniques and rituals to begin your own inner journey to embody the sovereign power of self-expression.

Developing an authentic voice as a healing facilitator or spirit keeper requires moving past the intellectual mind and dropping directly into the body. The throat chakra (Vishuddha) is the energetic epicentre of this work. It acts as the bridge between what you feel in your heart and how you express it to the world.

By utilising different sensory modalities  –  auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic  –  you can clear the static from this energetic centre and cultivate a voice which resonates with true authority and medicine.

Auditory Mindfulness (The Path of Sound & Resonance)

For facilitators who process the world through sound, authentic expression is found by listening to the subtle frequencies of the body before speaking.

  • The Drone-to-Dialogue Practice: Before recording content, writing, or speaking to a client, sit in quiet meditation. Begin to tone the seed syllable of the throat chakra, HAM (pronounced Hum). Let the sound vibrate deep in the back of your throat. After a few minutes of toning, abruptly stop and speak your message aloud into an empty room. Notice how the texture of your voice shifts from a shallow, head-centred pitch to a grounded, resonant tone.
  • The Raw Capture Audit: Record a voice note of yourself speaking casually to a loved one and then record another speaking “professionally” about your business. Listen to them side-by-side. Pay attention to the pauses, the cadence, and where your voice hitches or tightens. The mindfulness practice is learning to recognize the sonic fingerprint of your relaxed self, and intentionally bringing those unpolished, rhythmic pauses into your public facilitation.

Visual Mindfulness (The Path of Imagery & Sight)

For those who are highly visual, authentic voice is unlocked by anchoring your attention on symbolic representations of truth, allowing images to dictate expression.

  • The Lapis Blue Focus: The throat chakra is traditionally associated with a vibrant, electric blue. Sit comfortably and visualise a spinning, luminous sphere of lapis lazuli or turquoise light radiating at the base of your throat. As you breathe in, imagine this blue light expanding down into your chest and up into your jaw. When you speak your marketing truths or write your offerings, mentally speak through this blue light, visualising your words leaving your mouth coated in this colour.
  • The Sacred Witness Anchor: Write down the name of your lineage, your primary spiritual guide, or a younger version of yourself, and place that visual anchor directly behind your camera or at the top of your journal page. When you share your medicine, ignore the abstract “audience” or the algorithm. Speak or write exclusively to that one visual anchor. This eliminates performance anxiety and instantly snaps your language back into pure devotion.

Kinaesthetic Mindfulness (The Path of Sensation & Somatics)

For somatic practitioners, the throat chakra is treated as a physical valve. If you are holding back your truth, it will manifest as physical tension in the neck, jaw, and shoulders.

  • Jaw De-Armouring & Channelling: The jaw and the throat chakra are deeply connected; a clenched jaw literally cages your authentic voice. Before entering business or healing spaces, place your fingers on your masseter muscles (where your jaw hinges). Massage firmly while letting your mouth hang open, making an audible “Ahhh” Once the jaw softens, place one palm flat on your heart and the other flat on your throat. Speak your core message, feeling the literal, physical vibration moves from your chest into your throat and hands.
  • The Root-to-Throat Alignment: Sit with a straight, tall spine. Inhale deeply and imagine drawing energy straight up from the earth, through your root, and pooling at your throat. Hold the breath for a count of four, feeling the pressure and warmth building in your neck. As you exhale, soften your shoulders down and away from your ears. This anchors your voice in your pelvis, ensuring that when you speak, your words carry weight and substance, rather than floating out as anxious, ungrounded air.

A Quick Diagnostic for Spirit Keepers:

  • If your throat feels tight or choked before you post or speak, you are leaning into performance (Kinaesthetic cue).
  • If your mind is flooded with judgment about how you look or how the post grid matches, you are stuck in external visuals (Visual cue).
  • If your tone sounds rushed or overly clinical, you have lost your organic rhythm (Auditory cue).

Pause, select the corresponding sensory mindfulness tool above, and re-centre before you share your medicine.

Self-Expression & The Business of Healing

In the business of healing, traditional marketing formulas (like rigid sales funnels, high-pressure urgency, and overly polished corporate personas) usually fall flat. For a healing practitioner or spirit keeper (someone who holds space for ancient wisdom, lineage, or spiritual traditions), marketing is not about convincing someone to buy; it is an extension of the medicine itself.  When self-expression is grounded in authentic behaviour, marketing transitions from a chore into a beacon.

Why Authenticity Benefits a Healing Practitioner

Authenticity is not just a moral choice in this industry; it is a clinical and business asset.

  • It Solves the “Trust Deficit”: Vulnerable clients are looking for emotional safety. If your marketing feels like a polished corporate script, a client’s nervous system detects a mismatch. True authenticity signals that it is safe for them to drop their own armour.
  • Energetic Sustainability: Trying to maintain a “professional guru” persona leads to rapid burnout. Expressing yourself exactly as you are means you do not waste vital life-force energy pretending.
  • Self-Filtering Client Ecosystem: When you hide your quirks, your specific spiritual vocabulary, or your human flaws, you attract clients who want a generic version of you. When you express yourself truly, you act as a lighthouse for your “soul match” clients (the ones uniquely primed for your specific flavour of healing).

How Authentic Self-Expression Looks in Marketing

Authentic self-expression is the bridge between your internal spirit keeping and the outer commercial world. It moves you away from generic “wellness industry” aesthetics and into something singular.

 Documenting over Creating

Instead of manufacturing “content,” authentic self-expression looks like pulling back the curtain on your actual practice. If you are a spirit keeper, it is sharing a glimpse of your morning altar configuration, your relationship with local plants, or a real-world lesson you just integrated. It is speaking from the messy middle of life, rather than from an untouchable pedestal.

 De-Sanitising the Visual Narrative

The mainstream wellness market loves minimalist, beige, perfectly curated Instagram feeds. Authentic expression disrupts this. It looks like whatever matches your true spirit: perhaps it is raw, unedited videos in nature, bold and chaotic colours, or zero makeup. It shifts the focus from looking flawless to feeling alive.

Language of the Soul vs. SEO Keywords

While search terms have practical use, authentic marketing favours visceral, evocative language. Instead of just saying you offer “stress management coaching,” your self-expression might look like describing the feeling of “reclaiming the scattered fragments of your attention from a loud world.” You speak to the deeper, spiritual root of the issue.

The Core Shifts: Traditional vs. Authentic Marketing

The chart below summarises the differences between mindset and behaviours.  As a spirit keeper and healing facilitator you are keen to protect sacred knowledge, therefore walking the path of excellence requires one to stop following the crowd and to be grounded, centred and aligned in what your Soul wishes to preserve as knowledge for future generations.

A Note for Spirit Keepers: When you share your medicine, you are operating as a channel. Authentic marketing is simply letting that channelling happen in public space. It allows the spirits, lineages, or modalities you work with to be felt by the person on the other side of the screen before they ever book a session.

Summary & Conclusion

A final thought: by working with the throat chakra and its gift of self-expression, you are not just “thinking” about self-expression you are feeling it and you are weaving it into your mind, body and spirit as a way of living and being.  Authentic expression is when your personal and public persona are in alignment, centred and grounded.

Next month …

December 2026 I will be focusing on the characteristic of self-exploration and its qualities as a healing facilitator and Spirit Keeper.

Until next month. From one kindred spirit to another – be safe, be well, be authentically you.

In gratitude
