Understanding Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals & Their Impact on Women’s Health

As women, we’re well-versed in the crucial role hormones play in our bodies, from regulating mood to influencing our reproductive health.

But what about those other sneaky influencers?

Enter endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), not exactly hormones themselves, but rather chemicals that mimic or interfere with hormone function.

Found in everyday products like food, personal care items, and manufacturing materials, EDCs can be tricky to avoid. Yet, awareness is our greatest defence. When absorbed into the body, these chemicals can throw our natural hormone levels out of whack, potentially leading to a host of health issues.

Let’s dive into some common examples: Phthalates, often lurking in food containers and plastic wraps, can disrupt testosterone production. Meanwhile, Bisphenol A (BPA), though banned in baby bottles, still hides in water bottles and canned goods, posing risks to female egg quality. And then there’s chlorpyrifos, an insecticide found in commercial agriculture, linked to developmental delays and ADHD in children.

So, how do these chemical imposters impact us?

They can mimic or alter our hormone levels, causing symptoms akin to hormonal imbalances. From stress intolerance to thyroid disruption and immune system weakening, the effects are far-reaching.

To minimise exposure, consider simple lifestyle changes: opt for fresh foods over canned, choose organic produce when possible, prioritise filtered water, and steer clear of plastic containers, especially in the microwave. And don’t forget to scrutinise personal care products, avoiding those laden with added fragrances.
