Have You Heard About It Yet?

DEEP OSCILLATION® therapy (DOT) is described as ‘intermittent, electromechanical, electrostatic field therapy’ that originates from Physiomed Elektromedizin AG in Germany. DOT carries an international patent and is clinically proven.

DOT is non-invasive, gentle, and pleasant, and permeates an 8 cm depth without applying pressure. In action, low-frequency impulses are delivered to the tissue layers via the vinyl-gloved hands of the therapist. As the hands glide over the tissue, it is attracted and released up to 250 times a second. DOT can also be applied via special applicators 1.5 cm, 5 cm and 9.5 cm in diameter, which makes the therapy uniquely available as self-treatment too.

Why is it different from conventional electrotherapy?

What happens in treatment?

During treatment, the client holds a titanium bar loosely in the palm of their hand (or it is placed between their toes). The therapist adheres an electrode to their forearm or ankle and wears a pair of vinyl gloves. Vinyl is the medium for the therapy to flow. Both the titanium bar and the electrode have leads that connect to the device. Basic and Pro versions of the Personal device are available and are pre-programmed with a range of indications. In addition, the Pro has an individual area to create your own programme.

Neither heat nor electrical stimulation are involved during DOT treatment, so inserted pins and plates, prosthesis, and breast implants are perfectly safe to work over.

Contraindications are that of normal massage plus pregnancy and pacemaker.

Seven Benefits of DOT

  1. Pain relief: DOT can help alleviate acute or chronic pain associated with various conditions, such as arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, tennis/golfer’s elbow, or sports/occupational injuries. The gentle vibrations penetrate deep into the tissues, reducing muscle tension, and promoting relaxation.
  2. Oedema reduction: This treatment is also effective in reducing oedema, which is the accumulation of excess fluid in the tissues. The oscillations create a mechanical effect that enhances lymphatic drainage, helping to remove fluid and reduce swelling.
  3. . Accelerated healing: Deep Oscillation promotes healing by stimulating circulation, which increases oxygen and nutrient supply to the tissues. This enhanced blood flow can facilitate tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
  4. It is used in pre-operative care to stimulate the lymphatic system, break down any fibrosis pre-liposuction (making cannula insertion easier), prepare tissue for incision and reducing the post-operative complications, and promote enhanced healing.
  5. Improved mobility and flexibility: The mechanical vibrations of deep oscillation can help increase the flexibility and range of motion in the treated areas. By reducing muscle tension, breaking down scar tissue, and promoting tissue elasticity, it can aid in restoring mobility.
  6. Relaxation and stress reduction: Deep oscillation has a soothing effect on the body, inducing a state of deep relaxation. This can help reduce stress, promote better sleep, and improve overall well-being.
  7. Saving the hands of the therapist.  Because the application of Deep Oscillation is so gentle, wear and tear on the therapist’s body is reduced.

About the Author: Mary Fickling

Mary Fickling is a pioneering figure in the emerging field of Deep Oscillation therapy. Mary and her sister and co-director, Julie Soroczyn, made a profound commitment to improving the lives of individuals with Lymphoedema when they formed PhysioPod® UK in 2007. Not only has Deep Oscillation transformed the way therapists work, but it has also empowered patients to take control of their own well-being and reshaped the landscape of lymphoedema and lipoedema care with the personal unit. Though not winners in the recent Self-Care Forum awards judges wrote, "PhysioPod had clear objectives and have improved outcomes for patients and the NHS with lymphoedema.” PhysioPod have been approved NHS suppliers since 2012 and are recommended suppliers of the AACP. PhysioPod® supply therapists with this transformative tool, which expands their capabilities and allows them to provide more personalised care to patients, improving outcomes and quality of life. Through partnerships with healthcare professionals, researchers, and patient advocacy groups, Mary has championed new discoveries and advancements in therapy, continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the treatment of lymphoedema and lipoedema. Mary Fickling's pioneering work with her Sister Julie, and their passion for enabling self-care have made an indelible impact on the lives of those affected by lymphoedema and lipoedema. Their contributions to the field will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of therapy and self-care for lymphoedema and lipoedema.
