Practical, actionable support for women struggling to conceive
Fertility is often approached from a purely physical perspective, focusing on hormones, diet, reproductive health and medical investigations. While these are essential, they are only one part of the whole.
Conception is a whole-body experience and does not happen in isolation from the nervous system.
It happens within it.
For many women trying to conceive, especially after loss, prolonged IVF cycles or unexplained infertility, the body can be carrying unresolved emotional stress, subconscious fear and protective patterns that quietly influence the fertility journey.

This is where Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) becomes a powerful tool.
Not as a “quick fix” but as a way to gently release what the body has been holding onto and create the internal safety needed for conception.
How EFT Helped Me
I’ll be honest, I was sceptical about EFT at first.
When I first came across the technique, my immediate thought was how can tapping on the body possibly create any real emotional or physiological change. It felt like just another wellness trend being talked about online, so I ignored it for a long time.
Eventually, I decided to try it for myself.
The first time, I was genuinely surprised by how much calmer I felt after just one session. As I began to explore it further, I started to notice something even more profound, how much my body had been holding emotionally completely outside of my conscious awareness.
What I came to understand is what we refer to as the subconscious.
I can honestly say EFT changed my life.
It first supported me in processing deep layers of grief, guilt and sadness following the passing of my mum and that was my first real “aha” moment.
But it was when I later began working with my own fertility related trauma, including ectopic pregnancy losses and their emotional triggers, that I truly realised the depth of its impact.
This was not surface level relief, it was a game changer at a nervous system level.
I have used EFT ever since, both personally and in my work, and I am still continually in awe of the shifts I witness, not only within myself but in the women I support.
What Are Fertility “Blocks”?
Let’s be clear, your body is not “broken.”
When we talk about fertility blocks, we are not blaming the body, we are listening to it.
What can start to show up:
- Emotional impact from experiences such as loss, IVF, procedures or repeated uncertainty
- Ongoing anxiety or feeling “on edge” even outside of active treatment or waiting
- A sense of disconnect from the body as a protective response
- Hypervigilance around symptoms, timing or anything changing in the body
- Difficulty trusting the body after disappointment or repeated challenges
- Mindset patterns and subconscious beliefs shaped by the journey, such as fear of time running out or “what if it doesn’t happen for me” or “my body is broken”
- Decisions, thoughts, or patterns driven by fear rather than safety or trust
From a physiological perspective, chronic emotional stress can dysregulate the nervous system, keeping the body in a prolonged fight or flight state.

When the body does not feel safe, it prioritises survival over reproduction.
EFT works by directly addressing this emotional and nervous system load.
What Is EFT & Why It Works for Fertility
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), often known as tapping or acupuncture without the needles combines:
- Gentle stimulation of acupressure points on the body
- Awareness of thoughts, emotions, and triggers in real time
- Verbal acknowledgement of what is present, rather than avoiding or suppressing it
This mind-body approach helps regulate the nervous system while working directly with emotional and subconscious patterns. It is gentle but has tremendous results.
Clinical research has shown EFT is associated with a significant reduction in cortisol levels, with studies reporting decreases of around 43%.
But beyond relaxation, EFT works at a deeper level.
Here is what is actually happening.
It regulates the stress response
Tapping sends calming signals to the brain, particularly the amygdala, helping to reduce the fight or flight response and lower cortisol levels.
It allows the body to release held emotional stress
Unprocessed experiences such as loss, fear, guilt or repeated disappointment are not just in the mind. They are held in the body. EFT helps release this emotional load.
It allows the body to process and release held emotional experiences
The fertility journey is often made up of a series of emotionally charged events that can deeply impact a woman’s sense of safety, calm and hope. For some women, it can even feel traumatising at times.
This can happen during IVF cycles, pregnancy loss, medical procedures, diagnostic investigations, or difficult pregnancy and birth experiences. Each of these moments can leave emotional imprints in both the body and mind.
Over time, these experiences can accumulate and feel heavier to carry, making it harder to remain grounded, hopeful or emotionally regulated within the journey.
They often carry emotions such as fear, grief, guilt or overwhelm. When these experiences are not fully processed, they can remain stored within the nervous system and become easily reactivated by future triggers.

EFT helps to safely process and integrate these experiences so they are no longer held in an activated or triggering way within the body.
It works with the subconscious mind
Many fertility struggles are influenced by subconscious beliefs formed through past experiences, such as “it is not safe for me to be pregnant” or “my body cannot do this.” EFT helps bring these patterns to the surface so they can be gently reprocessed.
It rebuilds the mind body connection
When fear or trauma is present, many women disconnect from their body as a protective response. EFT helps restore connection and trust.
It creates a felt sense of safety
Fertility is deeply linked to how safe the body feels. When the nervous system is calmer, the body is no longer held in constant protection mode.
When to Use EFT in Your Fertility Journey
EFT can be integrated at key emotional points:
- To support daily emotional regulation
- During the two week wait
- Before appointments or scans
- When triggers arise such as pregnancy announcements, dates or procedures
- When experiencing waves of fear or “what if” thinking
- When feeling disconnected from the body
Consistency matters more than duration.
Even five to ten minutes a day can begin to shift your internal state.
For deeper emotional patterns, long standing trauma or complex fertility related grief, EFT is best supported with a certified trauma informed practitioner where these experiences can be safely processed at root level.
For everyday emotional regulation however, EFT becomes a practical self support tool you can return to in the moment.
A Practitioner Insight
Many women I work with are doing everything “right” physically and still feel stuck.
What shifts things is not doing more.
It is creating internal safety.
Because the body is always listening.
And when it no longer needs to protect itself from past pain, fear or unresolved emotion, it can begin to soften.
Not just physically. But fully

Final Thoughts
Using EFT for fertility is about:
- Releasing what has been held
- Calming the nervous system
- Rebuilding trust with the body
- Creating safety from within
From that place, the fertility journey becomes not just about outcome but about coming back into alignment with yourself.
And this work does not end at conception. EFT can continue to be a supportive tool during pregnancy and beyond, offering a way to regulate the nervous system through the emotional and physical changes of motherhood.
