My Concepts

As I’ve developed my Intuitive Swimming Method, I’ve created a set of concepts to help swimmers change their approach to swimming:

I love a catchy title! They’re here for a reason. I feel like my approach covers a lot of ground, so these concepts are a way get to the point, be specific and tackle the limiting beliefs that a lot of swimmers have told me about.

Swim Your Way

I believe that swimming comparison, envy and self-judgement ends when you no longer aspire to swim or be like someone else.

I believe that you can become proud of your swimming by developing your own swimming style.

Swimming Freedom

I believe that you can become more empowered in the water, and develop the confidence to bend or break all those swimming rules to allow you to swim in a way that works for you.

‘SwimHappy’ (not a typo!)

I believe that you can SwimHappy — by prioritising the feedback from your senses as you swim.

I believe that swimming gracefully allows for efficiency and speed and most importantly, enjoyment.

Swimming in the Present Moment

I believe that when you learn to Swim in the Present moment allows you to make a change, any change to your swimming

I believe that you can become aware of your inner monologue as you swim and instead prioritise your awareness and attention to bring you into the present moment

I believe that being aware of the external stimuli around you is a way to be present, conscious and mindful with your eyes open in whatever activity you choose to do

Tone Awareness

I believe that your connection to the water comes from a 2 way connection between your body and the water.

I believe that excessive muscle tension isn’t the only way to get more swimming power.

I believe that with Tone Awareness, an awareness of how much tension you need when you swim helps map your body to the water and helps you swim faster and further without fatigue

About the Author: Brian Holliday

My name is Brian Holliday and I’m a self taught swimmer. Up until a few years ago I was struggling to even swim a length of front crawl...I seemed to be battling against the water every stroke. I couldn’t breathe properly. I felt like I was always sinking. Everyone and I mean everyone would overtake me. Every time I stopped for a breath, I felt ashamed. I was so embarrassed by my swimming. Worse still, I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. However, as a newly qualified AT Teacher, I realised that I could apply and adapt much of what I was teaching to transform my own swimming. I spent two years swimming twice a day, five days a week, observing, investigating and learning until I had solved all my swimming problems and achieved all my swimming goals and I became the swimmer I’d always dreamed of being. Quite by accident, I had devised a unique approach to improve my swimming simply by changing my thinking as I swam. I now call this approach the Intuitive Swimming Method.
