7 Shifts I Use With My Clients to Support Conception After 40

Trying to conceive after 40 isn’t just about eggs, hormones, or perfectly timed ovulation. While these are important pieces of the puzzle, true fertility support is often far more holistic.

Over the years, both through my own four-year fertility journey and in my work with clients, I’ve seen the greatest transformation happen when women begin supporting their whole selves — body, mind and emotions — rather than searching for the next quick fix.

These are the shifts I encourage every woman to explore.

1. Look beyond standard fertility tests

Start by building a complete picture of your health with a practitioner who takes a holistic approach to fertility. Hormone balance matters, but so do nutrient deficiencies, gut health, inflammation, thyroid function and overall wellbeing.

A personalised nutrition plan and carefully selected supplements can help create stronger foundations for conception while supporting your body in the way it uniquely needs.

2. Reduce your everyday toxic load

We often think about what we eat, but forget about what we’re exposed to every day.

Household cleaning products, plastics, cookware, fragrances, candles and beauty products can all contribute to your body’s overall toxic burden. You don’t have to replace everything overnight, but making small swaps over time can help create a healthier environment for both you and your future baby.

3. Help your nervous system feel safe

One of the most overlooked aspects of fertility is the nervous system.

For many women trying to conceive after 40, stress is not simply about having a busy life. It can come from years of uncertainty, medical appointments, fertility treatments, pregnancy losses, difficult decisions and the emotional weight of carrying hope and fear at the same time.

When the body has been through prolonged emotional or physical stress, it can remain in a heightened state of protection. Supporting your nervous system is not about eliminating stress completely — that isn’t realistic — but about helping your body experience more moments of calm, safety and regulation.

Breathwork, gentle movement, mindfulness, meditation and gratitude practices can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system; the body’s natural state of rest, repair and restoration. Even small moments of intentional calm throughout the day can create a sense of balance and connection within yourself.

4. Make space for emotional healing

This is often the step many women avoid because it feels uncomfortable, yet it’s the one that can bring the deepest transformation.

Pregnancy loss, unsuccessful treatment cycles, disappointment and years of uncertainty can leave emotional imprints that are rarely acknowledged. I know this firsthand. During my own fertility journey, I spent years trying to fix my body while ignoring the emotions I was carrying.

Giving yourself permission to process grief, fear and unresolved emotions doesn’t mean dwelling on the past. It means allowing your body to stop holding onto what it has been protecting for so long.

5. Create a morning routine that supports you

How you begin your day influences how you move through it.

Instead of immediately reaching for your phone or thinking about fertility, take a few moments to check in with yourself.

Ask, What do I need most today?

Perhaps it’s a nourishing breakfast, gentle stretching, journaling, meditation or simply sitting quietly with your morning tea. Even ten intentional minutes can help regulate your nervous system and create a greater sense of calm before the day begins.

6. Don’t let everyday stress become chronic

Stress is part of life, but when it becomes constant, it can affect many aspects of our health.

Rather than waiting until you’re overwhelmed, build small moments of recovery into your day. Set healthy boundaries, take regular breaks, spend time outdoors, limit social media when needed or practise simple breathing exercises between meetings.

These small daily habits often have a greater impact than occasional acts of self-care.

7. Work with the subconscious, not just the conscious mind

Many women know, consciously, that they want a baby more than anything. Yet beneath that desire, there can sometimes be emotions, fears or protective patterns that they are not even aware of.

After months or years of trying, pregnancy loss, difficult experiences or feeling disconnected from their body, the subconscious mind can begin to create protective responses. This might look like fear of getting excited, anxiety around each cycle, difficulty trusting the body, or beliefs such as “my body is failing me” or “it may never happen for me.”

These patterns are not a sign that something is wrong with you, they are often the mind’s way of trying to keep you safe after experiencing uncertainty or pain.

This is where mind-body approaches can be incredibly supportive. Techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), hypnosis and guided visualisation work with the subconscious mind to help process unresolved emotions, release limiting beliefs and create a deeper sense of safety within the body.

By bringing awareness to what has been held beneath the surface, you can begin to shift from fear and protection into greater trust, hope and emotional resilience, supporting not only your fertility journey but your overall wellbeing.

A final thought

Conceiving after 40 isn’t about striving for perfection or controlling every outcome.

It’s about creating the healthiest environment you can — physically, emotionally and mentally — while learning to trust your body again.

Every small shift is an investment in your wellbeing. And regardless of where your fertility journey leads, these changes support not only your chances of conception but also your overall health, resilience and quality of life.

After all, fertility isn’t simply about preparing for pregnancy. It’s about caring for the woman who is hoping for it.
