Help keep children safe from drowning, with SwimTayka

SwimTayka, a UK‑based charity, is dedicated to tackling one of the world’s most preventable tragedies: drowning.

Every year, an estimated 360,000 people lose their lives to drowning, making it the third leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide. Many of these victims are children who live near open water but lack basic swimming and water safety skills.

About SwimTayka

SwimTayka works with local partners to provide free swimming lessons and drowning‑prevention education to children living along rivers, lakes and oceans around the world – including Vietnam, Bali, Brazil, and Peru – and is also launching a new programme in the UK. These programmes not only equip children with essential survival skills but also promote clean water stewardship and build lasting community impact.

Since its founding, SwimTayka has reached more than 13,700 children, and 9,700 children have successfully graduated in survival swim skills.

How supporters can help

Swim the English Channel as part of a relay team

The English Channel Relay Swim – often called the ‘Everest of the swimming world’ – is SwimTayka’s flagship fundraising challenge.

Every summer, relay teams of six set off from Dover heading to France, taking it in turns to swim an hour at a time, supported by a boat and pilot organised by SwimTayka.

Participants receive full guidance from SwimTayka’s experienced team, including training weekends, support with cold‑water acclimatisation, and advice on navigating challenges like currents, jellyfish and night swimming.

In return, each swimmer commits to raising at least £1,500 for SwimTayka.

Channel relay swimmers consistently describe the experience as life‑changing – an extraordinary physical challenge mixed with the pride of funding programmes that save young lives.

Volunteer on an international SwimTayka programme

For those who want to make a hands‑on difference, SwimTayka offers volunteer opportunities with partner programmes.

Volunteers – many of whom are swimming teachers – help teach children to swim, and also support the local swim teachers.

Volunteers frequently report profound personal impact – seeing children gain confidence, learn lifesaving skills, and develop new respect for the water. These programmes create a legacy: today’s students often grow into future instructors, strengthening water safety for generations.

Why your support matters

Drowning remains a silent epidemic affecting some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. SwimTayka directly addresses this global challenge with training, knowledge, and empowerment – one child at a time.

By donating, swimming, or volunteering, supporters play a critical role in expanding lifesaving education & enabling SwimTayka to reach more communities each year.
