Fresh basil isn’t just a fragrant herb that adds flavour to your meals, it also comes with a wide range of health benefits.

 

Here are some of the key advantages of incorporating fresh basil into your lifestyle:

Natural Antibacterial Properties

Basil contains essential oils such as eugenol, linalool, and citronellol, which have powerful antibacterial benefits. These can help fight bacterial infection making basil useful for:

  • Minor cuts or scrapes a crushed basil leaf applied topically may help cleanse and protect wounds.
  • Fighting bacteria in the mouth, which can lead to fresher breath and better oral health.

Relief from Colds & Congestion

Basil is often used in traditional medicine to ease cold symptoms, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties:  Acts as a natural decongestant.
Soothes throat irritation and supports the immune system to fight off respiratory infections.

How to Use Fresh Basil

  • Infuse in hot water for tea.
  • Add fresh basil to salads, soups and sauces.
  • Crush and apply to minor wounds or insect bites.
  • Use in homemade deodorising sprays (with water and vinegar or alcohol).
  • Fresh basil can be washed, chopped, mixed with a little water and then frozen in cubes. Ready to use in your cooking, a great addition to your meals!

Fresh basil is more than a culinary herb, it’s a gentle, effective natural remedy with a long tradition of promoting health and well-being.

I love fresh basil, tomato and mozzarella with olive oil drizzled over it, it is a lovely salad or starter.  I enjoy basil in pasta dishes and even chewing on a fresh leaf has a pleasant taste.
