I helped a farmer friend birth some lambs the other day. It was one of the most fulfilling, rewarding evenings of my life so far.

To witness new birth was both a privilege and a joy. The cute little lambs, barely able to stand on their feet, were brand new into this big, wide world.

I suppose it got me thinking about this time of year. Now that we are in Spring, it’s a good opportunity to reflect on new life, and what it means.

For Christians, Easter happens at this time. It is our most holy festival, where the triumph of Life over death is celebrated.

Easter used to be my grandmother’s favourite holiday. As a child, this confused me a bit, as at Christmas there were more presents.

For all of us, life comes with twists and turns, with ups and downs. Some of these are predictable, while most are not.

One of the focusses of coaching – and indeed in wellbeing therapy – can often be to help the client see what is in their control and what is outside their control. We can’t predict what is going to happen in the future, but we can prepare ourselves. We can expect the unexpected.

This might seem a morbid subject, but one of the few certainties of this life is death. It happens to all of us once; how ready for it are we?

The lambs reminded me of the beginning of life. We are all too aware of the effect that death can have on those around the deceased.

How can we prepare for the ends of our lives? Surely part of it is through a life well-lived: one of connection, of impact, of giving.

Here are some questions for you to consider:

  1. What is the meaning of my life? What do I want to be remembered for?
  2. Who is important in my life? How am I prioritising connection with them?
  3. What do I do for fun? How am I allowing for happiness in my life?
  4. When am I resting? What am I doing to ‘pull back the bow’ so that my ‘arrow’ can fly further?
  5. Am I prepared for the unexpected? Are my affairs in order (life insurance / assurance, will written, etc.)

For Christians, death is not the end. Spring – and the season of Easter – provides a timely reminder of that.

As you step out into this new season of life, may you know joy, peace, & lasting purpose.
