The Essence of Autumn

As we find ourselves in the heart of Autumn, it’s a time of reflection and letting go, aligning with the Metal element in the Chinese 5 element theory. This season may bring about challenges like lung or sinus issues, dry skin, or irritable bowels.

The best essential oils for this time of year are those derived from leaves and needles, such as conifers like pine and spruce. They purify the air, invigorate your surroundings, and make breathing easier. As the days grow shorter, Eucalyptus can bring a sense of expansion and clarity.

In the midst of autumn, it’s also crucial to support the Fire element to soften and warm the Metal, preventing it from becoming too rigid or brittle. Uplifting oils can relieve feelings of sadness or melancholy that might arise Petitgrain essential oil is perfect for this job, made from bitter orange tree leaves, which support Metal, but with the gently uplifting fragrance of orange that eases the Heart (Fire).

Now, let’s talk about the essence of the season: Cypress (Cupressus Sempervirens)

Cypress is the embodiment of change and transformation. This evergreen tree, with its slender conical shape and dark green needles, is associated with cleansing and renewal. It’s a symbol of life after death and a source of comfort and solace.

Cypress oil helps us navigate inner and outer changes, reinforcing the ‘Metal’ function of letting go and embracing what’s new. It aids in managing fears that hinder change, like the flowing nature of water within the Metal element. It tells us…

“Mop up your tears & move on!”

Cypress is your ally for:

  • Dealing with emotional instability due to change or loss.
  • Helping animals cope with disruptions and behaviour shifts.
  • Managing grief.
  • Addressing hormone-related issues, especially irregular cycles.
  • Easing excessive perspiration.
  • Alleviating muscular cramps and oedema.
  • Supporting circulation, asthma, and acting as an insect repellent.

So, as autumn unfolds, think of Cypress as your companion in times of change and transition, and let it help you enjoy the quietly reflective space that Autumn offers.
