Spring Cleaning Beyond the Home, Mind, Body & Soul

Let Go & Make Space for Growth

There is something about spring that naturally invites us to clear, sort and create space.

As the days become lighter and the energy of the season begins to shift, many of us feel the urge to open the windows, clear out cupboards, tidy neglected corners and bring fresh life into our homes.

But over the last few weeks, as I have been settling more deeply into my own space, moving things around, clearing out the attic, sorting through old belongings, trips to the recycling centre and letting go of things from the past, I realised that what I was really doing was much more than physical spring cleaning.

It became a process of emotional and energetic clearing too.

Each drawer, each cupboard, each item I picked up seemed to carry memories, associations, old versions of myself, roles I had outgrown, expectations, attachments and pieces of the past that no longer quite belonged in the life I am creating now.

And it made me reflect on how often we focus on cleansing and decluttering our external environment, yet forget the importance of doing the same within ourselves.

Spring offers us a beautiful opportunity not only to clean our homes, but to gently clear what feels heavy, stagnant or no longer aligned within our bodies, minds, emotions and energy.

Even deeper than this I found that in the process of clearing, remembering and releasing – it made space for a deeper energetic recalibration and integration to happen. – This was quite profound and liberating, in the letting go came a deeper sense of wholeness, clarity and lightness.

Why Spring Can Feel So Heavy

We often think of spring as a season of effortless energy, motivation and renewal. Yet many women tell me that this time of year can actually leave them feeling unexpectedly tired, emotional, overwhelmed, foggy or unsettled.

After the slower, more inward energy of winter, the transition into spring can bring a sense of inner friction.

Part of you may long to move forward, create, begin again and feel lighter.

And yet another part may still feel weighed down by what has accumulated over the darker months – physically, emotionally and energetically. I have found that when we resist the natural urge to let go, we prevent ourselves from moving forward, staying “stuck”.

In Ayurveda, spring is associated with Kapha dosha, which carries the qualities of heaviness, slowness, coldness and stagnation. Throughout winter these qualities tend to build up in the body and mind.

This can show up as:

  • Low energy or sluggishness
  • Congestion, allergies or increased mucus
  • Feeling mentally foggy or uninspired
  • Emotional heaviness
  • Difficulty letting go
  • A sense of feeling stuck or overwhelmed

This is one of the reasons spring cleaning rituals exist in so many cultures. Deep down, we instinctively know that this season is asking us to create space.

Not by forcing ourselves into a dramatic transformation or strict detox, but by gradually releasing what feels old, heavy or no longer needed.

The Connection Between Our Outer Space & Inner World

Our environment has a profound effect on how we feel.

When our home feels cluttered, chaotic or filled with things that no longer reflect who we are, it can quietly keep us connected to old energy. This applies even if the “things” are out of sight, such as in a loft or attic space, garage or shed, in storage or even in a virtual space.

Sometimes we hold on to belongings for years because they remind us of a past relationship, a different stage of life, an old version of ourselves or simply because we feel guilty about letting them go.

But if we are honest, many of these things no longer support who we are becoming, or even what we need in the present moment.

As I have been making changes within my own space recently, I noticed that with every box or item I released, I felt lighter.

There was a sense of relief, more clarity. Lightness. More calm. More room to breathe.

It was as though clearing my physical environment also allowed me to clear space internally.

Our homes can become a reflection of our inner world. And equally, when we consciously shift the energy of our space, we often begin to shift something within ourselves too.

Energetic Cleansing: Why It Matters

Just as dust gathers in the corners of a room, energy can accumulate within us and around us.

Stress, difficult experiences, emotions we have not fully processed, old stories, overstimulation and even the energy of other people can leave us feeling drained, scattered or weighed down.

Many women I work with are carrying so much. – Not only the demands of daily life, but years of responsibility, people-pleasing, old wounds, self-doubt and pressure to keep going.

Eventually this can create a feeling of internal clutter.

You may notice:

  • You feel mentally overloaded
  • You struggle to switch off
  • Your home or mind feels chaotic
  • You feel disconnected from yourself
  • You know something needs to shift, but you are not sure what

This is where energetic cleansing can be so supportive.

Not in an extreme or complicated way, but through simple, intentional practices that help you release, reset and reconnect.

Gentle Spring Cleansing with Ayurveda

Ayurveda teaches that spring is traditionally the ideal time to clear accumulated Kapha from the system.

However, this is not about harsh detoxes, punishing routines or depriving yourself.

True cleansing in Ayurveda is about supporting the body’s natural intelligence and bringing things back into balance.

At this time of year, it can help to gently invite in more lightness, movement and flow.

This may include:

  • Eating lighter, cooked foods.. Boosting “agni” – digestive fire through focusing on light, bitter, and astringent foods.
  • A simple diet of kitchari (rice and lentils with a few spices) for a few days can act as a gentle way to detox and support digestion at this time of year.
  • Reducing very heavy, cold or processed foods
  • Drinking warm water or herbal teas
  • Gentle movement such as walking, yoga or stretching
  • Supporting the lymphatic system through dry body brushing and /or abhyanga – self-massage to help increase circulation and release toxins
  • Neti Pot & Nasya: Cleanse nasal passages with salt water and herbal oils to relieve spring sinus congestion.
  • Triphala: Take 1/2 tsp of Triphala powder in warm water at night to support gentle digestion and detoxification
  • Creating more space and simplicity in your schedule

But Ayurveda also recognises that what we hold emotionally affects us just as much as what we hold physically.

If we are constantly carrying stress, resentment, grief, self-criticism or old patterns, this too can create stagnation.

Spring is therefore not only a time to cleanse the body, but also to ask:

What am I holding on to that no longer supports me?

What feels heavy or outdated in my life?

What am I ready to release?

A Simple Personal Spring Energy- Cleansing Ritual

You may like to create your own gentle ritual over the coming weeks.

Choose one small area of your home – perhaps a drawer, a wardrobe, a bedside table or a corner of a room.

As you clear and tidy the space, ask yourself:

“What energy does this hold for me?”

Notice whether certain items feel supportive, joyful and aligned… or whether they feel heavy, outdated or connected to a version of yourself you are ready to let go of.

As you release things, imagine you are also making space within yourself.

You could then light a candle, diffuse some essential oils, sit quietly with a journal and reflect on:

What am I creating space for in my life?

How do I want to feel this season?

What am I ready to leave behind?

For me, essential oils such as lemon, peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender and frankincense can be especially supportive at this time of year – helping to clear, uplift, calm and refresh both the mind and the energy of a space. I love to diffuse my oils – which is a lovely way to fill your space with the healing benefits of the oils, their beautiful aroma and change the energy.

You may also wish to open the windows, let fresh air in, play calming music, burn natural incense such as sage, or simply sit in stillness for a few moments afterwards.

If you do not suffer from hay fever, a vase of freshly cut flowers or potted plant is a lovely way to brighten a space and uplift the energy once you have cleared and cleaned it. Many house plants also help to purify the air.

The ritual itself does not need to be complicated. What matters is the intention.

Creating Space for What Wants to Emerge

Nature does not bloom while still tightly holding onto the old.

The trees let go of what is no longer needed. The earth softens. New growth gradually emerges.

We are not separate from this process.

There are times in our lives when we too are being asked to clear, release and create space for something new.

Not by forcing. Not by rushing. But by listening. By honouring what no longer fits. And by trusting that in letting go, we make room for the next chapter to unfold.

Perhaps this spring, the invitation is not simply to clean your home.

Perhaps it is also to gently ask yourself:

What am I ready to clear, release and make space for now?
